Let's Talk Nutrition

Hello all! Recent events have led me to want to share my views on nutrition. As I have previously mentioned, I am not only a Yoga Teacher but also a Registered Dietitian (RD). When I tell people I'm an RD, usually one of four things happens:

One - they think it's cool that I'm an RD and that's about it.

Two - they tell me about their personal eating habits and how everyone should be following them. My view on this, one size does not fit all. If something works for you, GREAT, but it may not work for someone else so do not try and force it on someone.

Three - people ask my opinion on different fad diets. I am not a fan of fad diets. Usually they are unsustainable and cause more harm than good in the long run.

Four - my least favorite, people will get self-conscious about what they eat or how they look when I tell them I'm an RD. This makes me so sad because I truly believe everyone is beautiful and there is no one correct way to eat. Doctors, magazines, media, your friends, etc., love to say how you should eat, but, if it makes you miserable... what's the point?

This is my stance on basic nutrition... develop a healthy relationship with food. Don't let it control your life. Everything in moderation - if you indulge one day then fine! Just don't do it every day. With that said, if you have health conditions that require food restrictions, definitely follow them, but still have that balance that allows you to enjoy food. Easier said than done, but definitely it is possible.

To finish, nutrition is so important, but it is only part of the puzzle. Don't forget about physical activity and taking care of your mental health. Yoga is great for these pieces to the puzzle we call a "healthy lifestyle". A healthy lifestyle is different for everyone. The trick is finding what works for you and savoring this one life that we are given.

Namas(tay).
