Let's Talk Nutrition

Hello all! Recent events have led me to want to share my views on nutrition. As I have previously mentioned, I am not only a Yoga Teacher but also a Registered Dietitian (RD). When I tell people I'm an RD, usually one of four things happens: One - they think it's cool that I'm an RD and that's about it. Two - they tell me about their personal eating habits and how everyone should be following them. My view on this, one size does not fit all. If something works for you, GREAT, but it may not work for someone else so do not try and force it on someone. Three - people ask my opinion on different fad diets. I am not a fan of fad diets. Usually they are unsustainable and cause more harm than good in the long run. Four - my least favorite, people will get self-conscious about what they eat or how they look when I tell them I'm an RD. This makes me so sad because I truly believe everyone is beautiful and there is no one correct way to eat. Doctors, magazines, media

5 Year Throwback

Hello all... I have a different kind of post for you today. We are going to throw it back five years ago to an event that seemed horrible at the time but turned out to be a blessing. Five years ago yesterday I broke my knee and had to have surgery. It was a pole dancing accident... I was taking a pole dancing class with some friends when a hot guy walked in. He was so good looking I lost my concentration and my grip on the pole which caused me to fall and break my knee... JUST KIDDING! Unfortunately, the actual story is quite lame. I was on a date at a restaurant (not a first date, thank goodness). I had boots on with a heel and the floor was tile. As I walked down the tile ramp to go to the restroom my right heel slipped on the tile causing my left knee to slam straight down into the tile, causing my knee to break. A week later, I had surgery which required 2 screws and a wire to be put in. I was devastated at the time, since I had never broken a bone before and had never had to hav

Branching Out

Happy Monday, everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend. Andrew and I had a very full weekend. I feel like we need a weekend from our weekend! Luckily, for me, the weekend was packed full of yoga fun! I taught my usual Friday class at Elevate Community Yoga, and after, headed downtown to the Dragonfly Art for Life Studio - which recently opened in Modesto on J street. I met with the owner, Barbara, to discuss bringing free 30 minute lunch-time yoga classes to the community. Barbara seemed excited about the idea. I am very excited about it, but I will touch more on this later! Saturday was also a busy day, but the highlight was definitely my Classic Rock Yoga Experience at Elevate! 30 people showed up to rock n' flow and it was so fun. I was a nervous wreck the whole time, but it was a good nervous. I'm trying to branch out and do new things in regards to yoga. This was a good start. A couple weeks ago, I subbed for a heated Vinyasa flow class at Excel Crossfit in Manteca.

Superbowl Weekend

Hi all! I hope you had a wonderful Superbowl weekend, even if your team didn't win, and/or you don't care about football! Personally, I am a baseball fan, so I love the Superbowl because that means baseball season is almost here! This year, we had a poker night at our house on Saturday, and then headed to a buddy's house for the Superbowl on Sunday. It was a great time. We hung out with friends and had a chili cook off. My chili tied for first! I guess my family cookbook came through for me! One thing I find that I do, especially during sports games, is I like to stretch on the floor while I'm watching. It seems simple, but you can get a lot of stretching in - instead of just sitting on the couch! Next time you are watching TV, simply pick your favorite Yin pose (google Yin poses if you need to), get as comfortable as possible, and then just watch TV. Feel free to use props. The props don't have to be "official" yoga props; they can simply be throw p
